Is Your Title IX Team Ready for the New School Year?

The Department of Education recently issued a Dear Colleague letter reminding public K12 schools of their responsibilities under Title IX to respond to reports of sexual harassment and abuse of students by staff members. Effectively addressing reports of student-on-student and staff-on-student sexual harassment is a critically important function.

As you prepare for a new school year, especially if the new year brings new personnel to your Title IX team or new campus administrators, it’s important to bring everyone up to speed on their responsibilities regarding reports of sexual harassment and misconduct. Title IX compliance isn’t just the Coordinator’s responsibility. Investigators, decision-makers, appeal officers, and campus administrators and counselors all play important roles when concerns are reported. Having a shared understanding of the process can help districts respond more consistently and effectively.

This fall, Thompson & Horton LLP is offering several virtual training options designed for your entire K-12 Title IX team. The sessions focus on practical application of the legal definitions and required processes, including managing the situations educators are most likely to encounter.

Don’t Forget Campus Administrators and Counselors!

Date: At Your Convenience

Time: 90 Minutes

Administrators and counselors (even if they do not serve in an official Title IX role) are often the first people to hear about sexual harassment. Knowing what to do—and, just as importantly, what not to do—what questions to ask, when to involve the Title IX coordinator, and what information to document can make a significant difference in a district’s response.

Straight to the Office: A Campus Administrator’s Guide to Title IX is a pre-recorded training that provides an overview of the grievance process and discusses the administrator’s role in implementing supportive measures, discipline, and remedies. You can purchase access to the video for your entire district at a time that fits into your existing professional development schedules.
